It's all about the mangos! Oh- and the avocados, too!

We have restocked our avocado and mango trees. They are grafted and available in 3 or 7 gallon pots. Our trees are grafted and range in price from $30-$50 depending on size. Some varieties of avocado we carry are Oro Negro (Black Gold), Winter Mexican, Mexicola, Brogdon, Florida Hass (or Florida Haas), Hall, and Choquette to name a few.

Did you know that you can pick when your avocado tree fruits? Summer, fall, or winter- the choice is yours. We select cold-tolerant varieties -the size of the tree and its fruit can vary. Feel free to consult with Don about what's available and what avocado tree best suits your space.

Do you want an avocado tree and aren't sure where to plant it? These trees can take the heat. Plant in full sun for best results, don't plant it too deep. In other words, plant it...don't bury it. Last, but most important with avocado- excellent drainage. No stones or rock or weed barrier should be used around your fruit trees. Please keep the area under your fruit tree canopy clear, water regularly, and use a nice time release fertilizer. Many fruiting trees love our climate, but may not fruit well without food and water.

Mango trees are also available. We have Carey, Cogshall, Pickering, Glenn, 76, Valencia Pride and a few other varieties also in stock. They are grafted. Please remember that mango trees are more cold sensitive than most avocado. They also blossom in the winter, so make sure you are in a warm enough spot for these wonderful tasty fruiting trees before planting one. When in doubt- most yards tend to be warmest on the south or west side. Mango trees fruit in the summer, a most delicious reward for those sweating out the summer in Florida :)

Speaking of sweating- if you find it too hot to catch up with us at the farmers markets please contact Don to schedule your visit to the nursery. (941) 276-7758 is Don's cell number.

I have a small backyard(25' by 50'). What fruit tree would go best with the Mango Tree?

Hi John,

If you already have a mango tree- I hope it is a 'dwarf' or dooryard sized variety. If you have not purchased one yet- please consider varieties that are those sizes. Avocado trees also come in a variety of statures and would be a great option. Regular pruning on both can help you keep your trees petite. However- it is best to be conscientious in choosing varieties so that you don't have to devote too much time and effort in fighting the tree's true nature. Peach trees, some citrus varieties, jaboticaba, fig - there are many options. Consider your lighting, temperature (some spots of your yard may be warmer than others), drainage, and if there are any obstructions for height or width growth besides lot size. Most important consideration- what you like to eat :) Feel free to call Don at (941) 276-7758 for more information or to schedule a visit. I'm glad I caught your question- as I am not online often. You are welcome to call Don's cell and he can review what we currently have in stock.

Hi D&B,
Bought Oro Negro avocado at Englewood Farmer marketc. 40 inch tallong grafted tree. Mindy and Don were helpful with planting requiremen's and drainage suggestions. Plan on buying time release fertilizer for all my fruit trees.
I have one question about my new tree. Should tree be fenced to prevent wild life from damaged/eating it?
Thank you.

Hi John,

Thanks for your business and your question. Unless you are concerned about deer or hogs you should be fine. The tree doesn't have fruit on it yet so most wildlife won't be climbing it for a while.

I hope this helps. You are welcome to call (941) 276-7758 if you have any questions. We are quicker with a response on the phone.

Thanks!
Mindy

Hi Nellie, we have limited hours right now. We still welcome patrons but the scheduling varies as most of us are tending family with health concerns. As caretakers of higher risk folks we ask that people wear a mask when visiting the nursery and call ahead to make sure the hours of operation for that week. We expect to be back to normal capacity before fall. 941-276-7758

We have fruit trees, many varieties but usually not larger than 7 gallon. For berries usually we carry only in smaller 1-3 gallon size. For fruit trees we usually don't have larger than 7 gallon as we don't install or run equipment and most homeowners need portability and digging smaller hole. Plus establishment care is shorter for smaller trees. For larger trees a good option may be Fruitscapes out of Pine Island/Bookelia.

Hope this helps.
